We started our 17th of October meeting by welcoming a new member. We are always looking for new members to swell our ranks so if you are retired then go on line and search for “Retford Mens Probus” and come for a taster and see what we are about.
The presentation this week – “A History of Firearms” was given by one of our own members, Andrew Jefferson, who was able to mesmerise us men with a fraction of his collection of pistols and antique muzzle loading rifles used in the British-American wars. Andrew explained the beginnings of the Colt.45 hand gun and Winchester rifle. Sadly the inventor of the pistol was a church vicar whose father was also a vicar – if only he knew what he was starting!
Our speaker for the 7th of November was Mike Ogden and on his previous visit had entertained us by telling us about the escapades of the Zeppelins and how they among other things had bombed Retford during WW1, but on this occasion we floated around England on his narrow boat. We began our journey from Retford and travelled to the Misterton Basin and onto the Trent . I have passed Torksey on numerous occasions but never seen the ruins of Torksey Castle which we were shown from the River. We also saw the little folly house at Gate Burton which can be seen from the road. We passed through the Fens, where I grew up, and because the land is so flat there, there are few locks to encounter. Passing though little Venice in London was an eye opener and it seemed it was an envious location to live on the canal. The narrow boat then entered the river Thames and just managed to sail up stream against the flow passing the London Eye, by this time ‘our boat’ was looking out of place being so small against the width of the river. We glided by the rich and famous with their waterfront houses, but then, unfortunately, we ran out of time. The trip really made one realise what wonderful scenery we miss in this country by going everywhere by road.
Our next adventure on the 14th of November was with Mrs Samantha Glasswell and she explained “The Autochromes of Stephen Pegler”. On the 12th of December we will have our annual luncheon. If you would like to discover what Autochromes were then join us by searching for www.Retford Mens Probus or just turn up for a snifter, alternatively ring Chris on 01777 838421
