Rolling back the years was the theme when the Men’s Probus Club met last month! They rolled them back a few years, in fact they were rolled back to the late 50’s early 60’s when the country was locked in the throes of the Rock’N’ Roll era. After 50 years in the business, the local group had finally secured the services of one of the greats of the time, none other than the Rock ‘Roll icon Vince Eager. Vince was a member of the once famous Larry Parnes stable, which was responsible for the management of such stars as, Tommy Steele, Marty Wilde, Johnny Gentle, Duffy Power, Dickie Pride and Billy Fury to name but a few. Parnes also had connections with Joe Brown and American singers Gene Vincent and the late great Eddie Cochran. The entertainer gave a comprehensive account of the early years in the business, starting out in a Skifflle group and eventually building up to becoming a top line artist, appearing in top TV shows of the day namely, Six-Five Special, Oh Boy and Drumbeat. The talk was very informative and humorous and well received by the members, so much so, the artist has been approached for a second time when a suitable date is available. Retford Mens Probus look forward to welcoming the speaker back and listening to the escapades of Vince Eager part two?
