A few members were missing at the 25th September meeting featuring ‘How to Achieve a Healthy Wealthy Life in Retirement’ and perhaps now the missing members may wish they had been present ! We were given a worthy financial briefing by Roy Wood, financial adviser on what we could do to improve our finances. One quotation made me think, which affects many of us during retirement and this was ‘too many of us have too many days in the month to cover our earnings’. We were told that with basic investments we should gain an average of 5-7 % on our savings over 6 years to take in the ups and downs such as the 2009 financial collapse. Fortunately the market is now back up to the pre collapse values. We were reminded importantly that it is advisable not to put all our eggs in one basket. One prompt suggested was to have a “trustworthy” person added to your bank account who can instantly have access to your account to pay your expenses when you pass on, because your account, if this is only in your name, will mean that no one will be able to access that account once the bank is informed of your death and your dependants will not be able to pay your funeral expenses from your finances until probate is issued, which could be some time later.
At our meeting on the 3rd October we were firstly taken back to the real 1950’s by Robin our secretary whose quotes can be found on our website, Google “Retford Men’s Probus Club” and go to “BLOG”.
It was with trepidation that so many of us attended this meeting fearing that we would be put under a spell but it wasn’t like that! Our presenter, on this occasion was Nicole Huthwaite, who took us into Hypnotherapy – Fear or Fascination? Nicole began by explaining that the art of hypnotism went back 5000 years. We were taken through case studies including many instances where patients were cured of their problems after only a few sessions. One case study involved a man who was so terrified of flying that whenever he saw a road sign for an airport he went to pieces, unfortunately because of promotion he was required to fly and he was becoming traumatised. After a couple of sessions his fears ceased and what’s more he went on to fly all over the world and for the first time went on holiday by air. We also learnt that hypnotism was being used forensically. Lots of questions followed but if you wish to know more you will have to join us by going to our website above, or ring Chris on 01777 838421.
Our next meeting will cover “A History of Firearms” by Andrew Jefferson on the 17th of October.
